Narrative of the Young Shepherd

At the center of the captivating rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His being was mostly unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was to look after his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes among the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome scheme.
Stories of wolves preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but found no wolf.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village here only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
